The founding date of the church
is not noted, however the most probable
dates back to the first half of the
12th century, when it was cited in
a document as a church dedicated to
St. Paul built outside the second
ring of the city wall.
The structure and dimensions of this
church are those found on the apse
and sacristy of the current gothic
church.
The oldest St. Paul was enlarged in
the beginning of the mid 13th century
but only after the destruction of
the city walls, the church was able
to reach its current dimensions. The
central aisle was transformed into
a large chapel which opened onto a
presbytery with its own altar. The
chapel was decorated as we can see
in certain frescoes recently discovered
in the church.
In the baroque period the church was
renovated and additional altars were
added, of which, today, only the central
and two lateral remain along with
the confessional and the steps of
the presbytery with a marble fence.
