St. Andrew’s church, a very
ancient church was founded during
the period of Longobard control.
The particular layout of the apse
leads us to believe it dates back
to seventh century.
The church was restored during the
mid 12th century. The architectural
style of the frontal facade has three
portals of which the middle one with
arched beams, was sculpted after the
second half of the 12th century by
Gruamonte. Represented is the visit
of the Three Kings, an iconography
which suggests a special relationship
between the church and the urban portion
of Via Francigena, on which it was
built. Stylistically, both Gruamonte
and Enrico, belong to the same artistic
school of which the cathedral of Pisa
is a prime example.
